How to Select a Mattress
There are dozens of different mattress types and sizes to choose from,
so how do you know which one is right for you? Follow these steps to find
the perfect mattress, guaranteed.
Determine Your Needs – Before you research mattresses from brands like Serta, Sealy, and Tempur-Pedic,
determine your budget and personal needs. Consider the size of your room,
how well you sleep at night, and how you feel in the morning to determine
the size and type of mattress you need.
Find a Great Store – Buying a new mattress is a big investment, so be sure to make your purchase
from a mattress store you can trust. In San Francisco, Mancini’s
Sleepworld has been a favorite among Bay Area residents for over 40 years.
Ask Questions – Once you’re in the mattress store, utilize the experienced sales
associates to learn more about your options and determine which mattress
is right for you. Ask as many questions as needed to fully understand
Test-Drive the Mattress – After you’ve identified a few potential mattresses, kick off your
shoes and lie down on several different models for a “test drive.”
Follow the S.L.E.E.P. test and take your time to find the perfect mattress
and avoid buyer’s remorse later on.
Since there is no best bed for everyone, you will need to spend time in
the store considering your options to find the mattress that’s most
comfortable and provides you with the best support. When selecting a mattress,
consider the following features:
Ticking – This is the outermost layer of the mattress. Polyester and cotton-polyester
are common, but nicer mattresses may use jersey knit, microsuede, wool,
cashmere, or silk. More important than the material is the stitching that
binds the ticking to the top padding and affects how the mattress feels.
Coils – Coils provide the main support in a conventional innerspring mattress.
Heavier-gauge coils provide a stiffer suspension while lighter-gauge coils
are more bouncy and springier. Some mattresses beef up the edges with
more closely spaced coils, slabs of stiff foam, or thicker wire to keep
you from rolling off the bed at night. If you prefer an alternative to
innerspring mattresses, consider a foam mattress instead.
Box Spring – Also known as the foundation, the box spring adds another level
of support to the mattress. The Better Sleep Council recommends purchasing
a foundation and mattress as a set to help preserve the mattress.
